Estimations assume that by 2035 around 11% of the Europeans are vegetarian or vegan. Sales of plant-based products are increasing significantly. Cellular agriculture and precision fermentation have the potential to transform our food system.
End of September, Schlegel und Partner attended the New Food Conference in Berlin. It is Europe’s first and biggest conference on new-protein solutions first established in 2019. More than 400 attendees from around the world participated in the New Food conference.

The program covered the entire plant-based value chain and showed the latest developments in cultured-meat and fermentation technologies. All experts agreed that alternative proteins can and will revolutionize the industry, from the raw material supplier, to formulators, machinery manufacturers, packaging experts, biotech providers to suppliers and processors.

Regulatory hurdles in Europe regarding novel food approvals will be overcome in the next three to five years, according to the experts.

An industry-broad collaboration is key. Nevertheless, there is still a long way to go for instance in flavors, binders or other ingredients.
