"Shift of power in fast changing market structures"

Numerous representatives of global supplier groups and medium-sized businesses as well as people from universities came together at the first networking exchange and discussion round to consider the topic of “Shift of power in fast changing market structures“.
Frédéric Lissalde, Vice President BorgWarner Inc., president and manager of BorgWarner Turbo Systems served as Keynote Speaker and opened the event with his keynote address “Launching Innovation”. The meeting offered a lively and constructive interchange concerning the dynamic environment of supplier companies and requirements that arise in such an environment.

Topics such as electrification, mobility behavior or operating in a global market – as well as the highly topical VW emissions scandal and its impact – were examined and discussed from a wide variety of viewpoints.

The Shareposium participants agreed that the automotive industry and therefore its suppliers are facing a structural change of ever-increasing proportions. From a long-term perspective – based on discussion during the Shareposium – it is expected that established business models will be modified. Above all, the trend towards electrification will continue. Tesla as a pioneer in the production of electric vehicles can be cited as evidence for this development. However, combinations of internal combustion engine and electric motor will remain the norm for some time. At this point the industry is reliant on the expertise of its suppliers. The demand for product and application expertise of suppliers will provide an opportunity to secure established markets and to access new markets and applications.

The suppliers have to anticipate this change and focus on their core business to avoid going under in the face of competition. Owing to the dynamics in this sector, new start-ups and software companies will be entering the automotive markets and contributing new impetus.

Conclusion: Given sufficient willingness to adapt to this new situation, a variety of opportunities and new business potential will arise. This will require a systematic and regular analysis of companies’ own markets and appropriate adjustment of business strategies. Here it is good to have the right partner at your side.
